Intellectual Disability
Intellectual disability is a disorder marked by below average intellectual function and a lack of skills necessary for independent daily living. The condition begins in the developmental period. Intellectual disability affects about 1 percent of the population, and prevalence for severe intellectual disability is approximately six per 1,000 people, according to the DSM-5.
There are 8,500 mentally challenged people in about 200 Sunshine Home centers (50% of whom are over 18). In recent years, in an effort to reduce the burden of families of mentally challenged people and improve their social adaptability, Shanghai Government established Sunshine Home centers aimed at organizing training, rehabilitation and some simple work for them.
HandsOn Shanghai bring various activities there to assist them to improve their social adaptability and their life quality, help them build self confidence and their ability to get more involved into the community.
